USP College takes pride in the success and growth of our students. Mason Gotts’ journey is a testament to hard work and the power of creative expression.

Mason left his secondary school early with one GCSE, due to personal struggles and extenuating circumstances. He eventually came to USP College beginning in Level 1 Art, Media & Design, but due to difficulties involving his reactive mutism and autism, he decided to move to our Pathways programme.

Designed as a supportive learning environment, Pathways allowed Mason to develop his confidence, where he passed his Maths GCSE. He credits teacher Lucy Coleman for being particularly supportive to him during this time.

Mason built his way from Pathways to Vocational Level 3, developing both his artistic and personal skills. In his current course, Extended Diploma in Fine Art & Design, he enjoys the creative freedom as it allows him to integrate his personal beliefs into his work. His ultimate goal is to study Fine Art at university, with hopes of completing a PGCE and becoming a secondary school or further education teacher in the future.

Reflecting on his biggest achievement at college, Mason highlights the personal growth he has experienced. “My greatest achievement has been building up my self-confidence and not constantly worrying that I’m wrong. I don’t compare myself to others as much as I used to, and I’ve overcome a lot of self-doubt.”

Mason’s story is one of determination and perseverance. His time at USP College has not only strengthened his artistic abilities but also empowered him with the self-assurance needed to follow his dreams. We are incredibly proud of Mason and look forward to seeing where his journey takes him next.
