This course would benefit young people aged 14-19 who want an introductory understanding of the public services sector and who want to develop skills essential for the modern workplace. It is also appropriate for other learners who wish to gain an introductory understanding of a vocational area.
The BTEC First in Public Services provides learners with a broad understanding of the sector, opportunities to investigate specific areas of interest, and the chance to develop essential skills and attributes. It also supports progression to further study or an apprenticeship.
Learning outcomes include developing knowledge and understanding by applying learning and skills in a work-related context, and learners will develop skills such as teamworking, working from a brief, and presenting information effectively
The BTEC First in Public Services includes a core of essential knowledge and applied skills, with external assessment appropriate to the sector.
The qualifications have mandatory units which provide a thorough grounding in the sector.
There are also optional specialist units that allow a closer focus on a particular vocational area.
Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English Language. Maths also would be an advantage.
At least one GCSE must be grade 4 or above.
Grade 3 or above in any public service-related GCSE.
The course offers opportunities to develop skills in English and mathematics in relevant, applied scenarios.
The course provides opportunities for learners to engage with employers and carry out work-related activities.
The BTEC First qualifications are designed to motivate learners and prepare them for further study or employment.
Equipment: There will be a cost for a uniform, which will be no more than £100. Support is available if certain criteria are met.
Trips/Visits: The course will include visits to a range of public service settings all of which will either be funded by the college or a small contribution from students. You may visit;
Court hearings
Army barracks
Fire department
Paramedics
Police
Level 3 vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Nationals, especially in Uniformed Protective Services.
Students may be able to enter employment in a range of job roles within the Public Services sector, such as police officer or housing officer.
The course can help learners to develop transferable skills and provides clear progression pathways to further study or an Apprenticeship.
