Are you good at solving problems and considering a career in Engineering?

This practical course will see you develop both hands-on skills and academic knowledge of Engineering. You will study subjects such as health and safety, materials as well as build practical skills like machining techniques, fabrication and welding. There will be a strong emphasis developing your mathematic skills for engineering which will be key for progression into work or academic study.

What will I study?

With over 40 branches of engineering to discover, our dedicated staff ensure that you cover a wide range of areas to get the best experience on the course.

This practical course will see you develop hands-on skills and academic knowledge of Engineering. You will study subjects such as Mathematics, Health & Safety and Electronic Principles, alongside building practical skills in techniques such as welding, machining and maintenance processes.

Modules

There are two core and two mandatory units, as well as an additional four units that make up the hours for the course. Units 1 and 9 are assessed by external examination.

Mandatory units

  • Unit 1 - The engineered world
  • Unit 2 - Investigating an engineered product
  • Unit 9 - Interpreting and using engineering information
  • Unit 10 - Mathematics for Engineering

Additional units may include*

  • Unit  3 - Health and safety in engineering
  • Unit 5 - Engineering materials
  • Unit 7 - Machining techniques
  • Unit 4 - Engineering maintenance
  • Unit 17 - Welding

Entry requirements

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English Language or Maths.
  • At least one GCSE needs to be at grade 4 or above.

Additional costs

You will be required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during practical lessons. You will be expected to supply your own overalls, safety glasses and boots for approximately £50.

What could I do next?

Former students have successfully progressed to the Level 3 course. Some are currently at university studying Engineering. Many former students have accessed Apprenticeships.

Many former students are now working in a range of different Engineering environments, including a heavy metal fabrication environment, HGV mechanical engineering and Construction.
