Course Overview

Level 1 Engineering at the Seevic Campus is an ideal course for a school leaver and is designed as an introduction to college and will focus on the personal, social and employability skills you will need to progress to further studies in the Engineering Sector. Applicant also have the opportunity to progress onto employment-based programmes such as an Engineering Apprenticeship.

What will I study?

Applicants will study a variety of units that will look at developing soft skills such as planning, communication and motivation as well as hard skills such as reflective skills, planning and delivering presentations. Additionally, you will also use hand tools to make a tool tray and practice basic welding techniques. Applicants will also study Maths & English (if not at grade 4) as well as having lessons on different tutorial topics each week. Finally, there is an opportunity to take part in a community-based project at a local farm, to develop skills such as teamwork, problem solving and practical repairs and alterations.

In addition, you will take part in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) days and have the opportunity to attend trips to places including, for example Colchester Zoo and have guest speakers from the engineering sector covering a range of topics. 

Applicants should have a keen interest in a career in the Engineering sector and be prepared to, at times, take part in practical based activities, following strict health & safety procedures.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE grade 2 maths and English (or equivalent).
  • Age: 16-17 years

Students will be required to supply their own health & safety workshop clothing which consists of overalls, boots and goggles.

Additional costs

You will be required to purchase overalls and steel toe capped boots for working in the workshop.

What could I do next?

When you finish this course you could progress to the Level 2 BTEC in Engineering, or begin an Apprenticeship, Traineeship or Supported Internship programme dependent on your individual needs.
