USP College partners with local animal care organizations, giving students the chance to experience real-world animal care environments and build connections with industry professionals.
Level 2 Animal Care is a vocational program designed to support the development of students who wish to work with animals. The course will benefit anyone who has a passion for the welfare and safe keeping of animals, and those who are interested in entering the world of working with animals, be that dog walking and grooming or working at a petting farm. To be successful on this course you must be able to demonstrate a real commitment, desire and enthusiasm for the care of animals.
You will study a range of units, including:
Along with key areas of animal care, such as feeding, and accommodation, you’ll study a range of units, including;
The course content prepares you to safely work with, and care for, a range of animals
You’ll take a closer look at specific types of animals and the types of care they need, including how to nurse, groom and interpret their behaviour in order to work safely and efficiently. You will be given the opportunity to develop the working skills needed as an animal worker. This is ideal for a range of jobs with domestic animals, in agriculture or in environmental organisations.
You will also study some Science content including Animal Biology, Microbiology, basic Chemical reactions along with Physics such as the effects of forces. This extension Science content will help you prepare for Level 3 Animal management, where there are examinations including on Genetics.
You will experience both taught theoretical content as well as practical animal care and handling sessions. You will need to complete written assignment work, take examined units and document your safe handling of a range of animals.
You will have the chance to work alongside our Animal Technicians to care for our College animals, as well as visit farms to help care for larger animals. You will also have the chance to visit Zoos and learn first-hand about the variety of roles at the company as well as how they design enclosures and enrichment for their animals. You will be able to develop your science literacy in order to prepare for your future learning and to be able to care for and support the animals most effectively too.
You may progress onto an apprenticeship or directly into employment such as in a zoo, pet shop, farm or kennels.
