What will I study?

Each unit is assessed differently, including a range of assessment methods such as reports, essays, diagrams, presentations and tests etc.

Modules

The following are examples of modules you may study.

  • Human Biology units including anatomy and physiology, immunity, health & disease and the role of the health care professional
  • Social Science - psychology to explore psychological perspectives on development/health/inequality etc.
  • Preparation for Higher Education - a range of academic skills and units to prepare you for HE study.

Entry requirements

  • You must be aged 19 or over at registration
  • You must have English Language GCSE grade C/4 or above or Level 2 Functional Skills English. It is desirable to also have GCSE/L2 Maths but if not, then a commitment to study it alongside Access (on a separate evening) is required as most universities require both English and Maths.
  • Unfortunately, if you have neither Maths or English, we are unable to enrol you onto the Access course at this time. However, you could study GCSE English and Maths (potentially for free) at the College first, before going on to the Access course.

Why should I choose USP College?

  • Practical experiments as well as theoretical lessons
  • Expert subject practitioners who are also expert teachers of adults
  • Expert tutors with many years of experience in teaching the subject to Level 3 and beyond and in teaching and supporting adults returning to study
  • A friendly, supportive environment where students are challenged and engaged
  • Excellent pass rates and progression rates to university
  • Centre of good practice for the qualification board in many areas including the progress of students from starting points and for being a ‘keen and dedicated’ team who are ‘fantastic, reflective teachers.’ They always act ‘for the good of the learners,’ who get a ‘fantastic learning experience at USP.’

Additional costs

£3,180  (Eligible for Advanced Learner Loan)

  • You will need to purchase stationery, e.g. pens, paper, folders, plastic wallets

  • Additional minor costs for materials for experiments may apply.

What could I do next?

You could go on to study a degree in midwifery, nursing or another health-related field, e.g. occupational health, physiotherapy, radiography, paramedic science. You could also go on to study the Foundation Degree in Early Years at the College.

Former student success

Our students go on to study a variety of health profession courses at a wide range of universities, for example:

  • Nursing at the University of Essex and Anglia Ruskin University
  • Midwifery at Anglia Ruskin University and Middlesex University, London
  • Occupational Therapy at Canterbury Christ Church University.

I was working in North London for a private ambulance company doing hospital transfers, I began my Access course to enable me to study paramedic science at university. I initially failed the interview stage at university, but instead was employed and went through my training in house. This included one year at Anglia Ruskin, where I had to repeat the interview process and was accepted. Here, I was able to use the skills I learnt during the Access course, it took a lot of pressure off of me and gave me a head-start at university.

I would recommend studying at USP College, all lessons were taught to a very good standard and even if you struggled, you got the support you needed to improve. It was also a very nice environment, surrounded by helpful people and I never once felt out of my depth.

Charlie Rossi, Access to HE Health Professionals

I chose to do an Access course, as although I had the required GCSE's for university, I did not have good enough A-Levels. I also wanted to use it as a stepping stone to university as it had been a long time since I last studied.

I chose USP from personal recommendations and due to it being local to me and the hours working around school runs etc.

The Access course has allowed me to brush up on skills that I have not used for years, essay writing and research for example. It has also taught me brand new skills, such as Harvard referencing and allowed me to work on my time management skills too.

I have gained a conditional offer to study Midwifery this September at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford.
