Course Overview

In this qualification, learners will study biology, chemistry and physics which forms the foundation of health, life and physical science sectors. These sectors are wide-ranging, for example, nursing, allied health, clinical biomedical sciences, chemical engineering and physical properties of materials. This will give you a broad understanding of scientific principles including practical procedures and investigative skills along with scientific reporting. You will be assessed through the use of exams and coursework. It is ideal for learners who thrive in an engaging hands-on style of learning.

This course is a Level 3 National Extended Certificate equivalent to one A-Level and can be studied as part of an A-Level programme.

What will I study?

Applied Science allows learners to concentrate on the development of their knowledge and understanding as well as essential practical and research skills relevant in the science sectors.

Modules

The units studied will include the following mandatory content areas:

  • Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science
  • Unit 2: Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Unit 3: Science Investigation Skills

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English Language and Maths
  • Grade 4 or above in at least two Science GCSEs (or equivalent)

We recommend that you take Core Maths alongside this course.

What could I do next?

The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements of many relevant science courses. This course could prepare you for work in a wide range of the science sector from the health care sector, in particular in the NHS to the chemical industries and physical science.
