The mass media of the internet, film, television, newspapers and advertising play a significant part in our daily lives.
This is a challenging subject where you will look critically and analytically at online media, magazines, institutions, audiences, drama, advertising, and marketing.
You will investigate media industries, popular culture and digital technologies to understand how television, film, journalism and online media inform, entertain and influence us. The subject combines practical and theoretical work in order to facilitate an understanding of key concepts including ‘representation’ or ‘audience’, as well as developing a range of specialist skills.
You will undertake extensive research and create and evaluate a print based, moving image and web based production as part of your coursework. Also, you will be looking at a range of texts from classic advertisements to modern films and games.
You will complete an in depth analysis of six set texts which they will be expected to have an expert understanding of.
You will be assessed by examination and coursework.
Teachers have industry experience in film production and music videos, including winning national awards for their work.
It is highly recommended that students have a monthly subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud for Photoshop.
Media Studies provides an excellent foundation for further study in media-related courses at Higher Education level, as well as for a range of related subject areas in the Arts and Humanities. This subject works well with many Arts, Humanities and Social Science A-Levels.
