A-Level History is an ideal choice if you have an inquiring, critical or analytical mindset.

It combines very well with other humanities or social science subjects and is an ideal contrasting subject for science and maths.

What will I study?

You will learn about the history of Germany – from the Unification in 1871 to its evolution from empire to democracy by 1929. British medieval history 1450 to 1471. Germany from 1929 to 1991 – the Third Reich, the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and Re-unification The Wars of the Roses from 1450 to 1499.

There will also be a Personal Study on a topic of your choice - this historical investigation forms the coursework element of A-Level History and is worth 20% of your final grade.

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths.
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE English Language.
  • Grade 5 or above in GCSE History (if taken) or another GCSE written subject eg. History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature or Religious Studies (full course). 

We recommend that you take Core Maths alongside this course.

What could I do next?

If you are thinking of a career in Teaching, Law, Publishing or Journalism – or any role that requires the ability to communicate effectively and to evaluate/analyse complex data – then A-Level History can help. Former History students can be found at most of the top universities in the UK. In recent years a Grade A in History has helped such students on to degrees in History, Law, Medicine, Journalism and many other subjects.
