Course Overview

Creative Industries

A-Level Film Studies will enable you to deepen your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film; the main cultural innovation and major art form of the 20th century.

The interaction between spectator and film is central to this course.

There is a strong emphasis on investigating how film works both as a powerful medium of representation and as an aesthetic medium.

You will study a diverse range of film and explore the significance of film and film practice in national, global and historic contexts.

During the two-year course you will also have the opportunity to create your own short film.

Component 1 - Varieties of Film & Filmmaking

Hollywood 1930 – 1990 comparative
American film since 2005
British film since 1995

Component 2 - Global Filmmaking Perspectives

Global Film
Documentary Film
Film Movements (Silent/Experimental)

Component 3 – Production

Production, Analysis & Evaluation (developed over both years).

The course is 70% exam 30% coursework.

Trips and visits to exhibitions and galleries are a must to appreciate the historical development and contemporary trends within the film and media industry.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language and Maths.

Progress to our Higher National Diploma in Media (Broadcasting) at Palmer’s Campus.
