Advances in computing are transforming the way we work and our new Computer Science qualification will prepare you for this every changing field. This qualification is suitable for students looking to develop their applied knowledge and skills in Information Technology as part of a study programme alongside A Levels.
On this computer science course you will study topics covering a wide scope from Fundamentals of programming, Theory of computation and how algorithms are key. You will also look at computer organisation and architecture, communication and networking alongside databases and the huge growth area of Big Data. These are all assessed through 2 terminal examinations (80% of grade). Your systematic approach to problem solving is then looked at during a non-exam assessment, a computing practical project (20% of grade).
The course is assessed continuously. Units 1 and 3 are externally assessed. Students will sit one exam at the end of year 1 and one in January of year 2. Students will also submit three pieces of coursework during each year. Units 2 and 15 are internally assessed with students working to use web scripting skills to solve problems for local firms.
• Five GCSEs at grade 5 or above including English Language.
• Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths.
There may be trips that will incur an additional cost of £50.
Students with an interest in the Digital sector could progress to higher education as a route to graduate level employment, or can progress directly into employment or a related apprenticeship.
